Scholarship Application Process

Kids’ Chance of Connecticut, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, offers annual scholarships ($1,000–$5,000) to children of workers killed or seriously injured in work-related incidents, with amounts based on financial need and fund availability. Students can apply annually if eligible.

Who is eligible?

In order to be eligible for a scholarship grant, applicants must have a parent, step-parent or legal guardian who has been seriously or fatally injured in a work-related accident, repetitive trauma claim or occupational disease resulting in financial need. The following requirements must be met in order to be eligible to apply for a scholarship:

  • Applicants must be 15-26 years of age at the time disbursement of the Kids Chance of Connecticut scholarship grant.
  • Applicants must be accepted for enrollment or enrolled as a full-time student at a post-secondary school (university, community college, trade, vocational/technical college, etc.) at the time of the scholarship grant disbursement.
  • Applicants must have achieved a high school diploma by the time of the first disbursement of the scholarship award.
  • Applicants must complete a FAFSA, the free application for federal student aid.
  • Applicants must demonstrate financial need to pay for secondary education.
  • The applicant, their parent, step-parent, or legal guardian must be a resident of Connecticut.
What is the application checklist?
  • Signed Authorization/Attestation Statement (Download PDF)
  • Completed Kids’ Chance Scholarship Application with student, family and university/college/vocational/technical school contact information
  • Transcript of most recent grades – unofficial transcript is acceptable
  • Copy of Student Aid Report (SAR) you received from completing the FAFSA, with your Estimated Family Contribution (EFC), IF you are attending a 2 year or 4 year college or university
  • Brief description of the applicant’s intended major, educational and career goals
  • Brief description of how the injury to the worker has affected the financial circumstances of the worker and his/her family
  • Brief description of the injury, illness or fatality
  • Proof of compensable injury/illness claim such as determination letter by the state workers’ compensation commission, voluntary agreement or Finding and Award
  • Parents’ basic employer information such as name, address, phone
  • Student account statement from the university, college or technical school applicant plans to attend
What is the deadline?
Application must be submitted online by April 1, 2023.
What period of time does a scholarship cover?
Scholarships are awarded for one academic year and each student must reapply each year for continued funding.

Scholarship recipients cannot receive more than five academic years of funding.

Who reviews the scholarship applications?
All applications are subject to review by the scholarship committee and approved by the Kids’ Chance of Connecticut Board.
What is the amount of the scholarships?
The amount of a scholarship awarded is in the discretion of the scholarship committee and the Kids’ Chance of Connecticut board. The award of scholarships is contingent on the availability of funds to Kids’ Chance of Connecticut. The minimum amount of the scholarship is $1,000. Most scholarships are in the range of $1,000-$5,000.
What is the criteria for the scholarships?
Scholarship recipients are selected based upon their academic performance, need for financial assistance, personal leadership and their demonstrated contributions to their schools and communities.
